Honouring the Legacy of Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero
Event Date: 05/09/2024
Me he wai e māturu nei i aku kamo.
Kei hea rā koe, e te rua ngārehu o te kotahitanga!
Uia mai rā te urupounamu
He aha rā i pēnei ai?
He mōteatea, he apakura te kai i muri nei.
We, as a nation, are mourning the loss of our beloved Māori King, Kiīngi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, who has journeyed beyond the veil. We honour the legacy of our former king by upholding his key message of kotahitanga as a means to guide us in our mahi each and every day. In life and in death, we all bore witness to his impact and how much his deep belief and appreciation for kotahitanga really resonated with his constituents.
While the country mourned the loss of a great king, the royal family of the Kiingitanga movement mourns the death of a father, uncle, and grandfather. This distinction is very important, because to uphold the mantel of the Kiingitanga movement is a very heavy responsibility. There is a tendency to forget that the ordinary people that are placed within these extraordinary positions, are human.
As the torch is passed to his daughter, our new Queen, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te pō Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VIII, there exists a heavy burden for her to carry. To be at the head of the Kiingitanga movement comes at a heavy sacrifice. The sacrifice of one's own ambitions, the sacrifice of one's own personal indulgence in an effort to perform her ultimate duty, is a selfless act that bears heavy responsibility. A responsibility that should not be taken lightly.
He kura tangihia tēnei mōu e pīkau nei i tēnei kawenga nui whakaharahara. Kua whakaurupā ko ōu āwhero, kua whakaurupā ko ōu nawe, kua whakaurupā ko ōu whakaepaepa, kia tūwheratia ko ngā tauwharewharenga o tōu ngākau ki ngā āwhero, ki ngā nawe o tōu iwi Māori, kua whakakotahi mai nei i runga i tōu mana, i runga i ngā ohāki o tōu matua.
