Te Wānanga Tūāuriuri, Whāngai i te Hautapu ki Maketū: A Celebration of Mātauranga Māori through the use of Maramataka & Matariki

Event Date: 19/07/2024

We are thrilled to share some highlights of our recently completed wānanga, a remarkable gathering that was rich in Māori wisdom, cultural insights, and community spirit. This event brought together a distinguished lineup of speakers who shared their knowledge and experiences, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

Mervyn Ranga of Ngati Mahuta me Maketū Marae opened the wānanga with an inspiring kōrero about the deep cultural significance of his iwi and marae. His words resonated with the audience, underscoring the importance of preserving our heritage.

Rikki Solomon captivated us with his presentation, "Ko au ko te whetū, ko te whetū ko au," exploring the profound connection between our identity and the stars. His insights into celestial navigation and cultural identity provided a thought-provoking perspective.

Julian Wilcox & Dallas King engaged everyone with their discussion on Pūanga being the star that heralds the coming of the new year from the perspective of the Ngapuhi iwi. They skillfully bridged traditional and modern navigation techniques, highlighting their relevance in today's world and inspiring us to look to the past for guidance in our future journeys.

Donna Tūwhāngai took us on a journey about the significance of Puna and Hani, offering a deep dive into the origins and evolution of our world and culture. Her kōrero was both enlightening and empowering, reminding us of the strength and resilience inherent in our whakapapa.

The wānanga was enriched by the sacred sounds of James Webster and Hinemoa Jones, Tohunga Pūoro, who shared the spiritual significance of traditional Māori music. Their performance was a powerful reminder of the spiritual dimensions of our cultural practices.

Our event would not have been possible without the artistic and contributions of:

🌺 Taimārie Ake for his stunning design work that we had adopted as our logo.

🎨 Teteira Ormsby of Korokoro Arts and Healthy Families Rotorua for his beautiful tāonga that we shared with our practitioners.

🌳 Riyah Snow, Plant Nursery Coordinator for Coromandel Independent Living Trust, for the magnificent pohutukawa trees that were also gifted to each of our keynote speakers, as well as Maketū Marae for hosting this hui .

🎥 Toakahu Pere & Alkana Benioni from Te Kōhao Health & Hinemoana Collier from Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki for capturing the event for us all to remember.

🏥 Te Kōhao Health and Te Ngira Whānau Ora Collective for their unwavering support and continuous contributions towards our Healthy Families Te Ngira mahi, building healthy, thriving communities through systems change.

Preparing the fire was a challenging experience due to continuous rain, which made it difficult to maintain. Despite the obstacles, the ceremony proceeded smoothly within the time constraints. The hākari, provided by Raukawa Charitable Trust, was praised as the "meanest catering ever." Additionally, Georgia Barnett contributed a sustaining kai upon the arrival of our manuwhiri, enhancing the overall experience of the event.

Healthy Families Rotorua generously provided a kūmara from Hawaiki for the hautapu, for which we were blessed and very fortunate to receive.

This wānanga was a testament to the strength of our community and the power of shared knowledge. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who participated and contributed to making this event a resounding success.
