Rautaki Maori - Whitu-Waiariki sharing Tikanga Maori seen through different lenses
Event Date: 03/07/2024
Rautaki Māori: Whitu-Waiariki, of Healthy Families Te Ngira, recently delivered a presentation to the kaimahi at Te Kohao Health. In his talk, he shared a fascinating insight into tikanga Māori.
Ake began by discussing the unique narrative of the Te Arawa tribe, highlighting how it differs from that of the Kai Tahu (Ngāi Tahu) tribe. He emphasized the distinct perspectives each tribe holds, particularly in their telling of pūrākau (traditional stories) about the separation of Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother). While this story is widely known across many Māori iwi, Te Arawa and Ngāi Tahu each have their own unique interpretations and variations that reflect their individual cultural viewpoints and historical experiences.
Following this, Ake addressed some of the challenges facing tikanga Māori today. He spoke passionately about the ongoing efforts to reclaim and revitalize Māori culture, which has faced numerous obstacles due to historical colonization and modern societal changes. He highlighted the importance of these efforts in maintaining the cultural heritage and identity of Māori communities.
Ake concluded his presentation by discussing the significance of the Kīngitanga to the tribes of the Waikato region. He explained how the Kīngitanga has played a crucial role in uniting various iwi and preserving Māori sovereignty and cultural traditions. This movement remains a powerful symbol of unity, resistance, and cultural pride among the Waikato tribes and beyond.
