Programme

Pōwhiri Procedure (Tauutuutu):

Karanga -  a strictly female-performed wailing call of welcome
Manuwhiri - guests
Mana whenua - hosts
Waharoa - entry point
Whaikōrero - oratory, formal speechmaking

  1. Manuwhiri congregates at the Waharoa.

  2. Whenever possible, a host representative will communicate with guests prior to the commencement of the pōwhiri in order to make certain, their understanding of Ngati Mahuta/Tainui protocols.

  3. Significant roles are occupied by women, and as the manuwhiri approaches, the first voice will be the lament of a female participant in the karanga.

  4. The women on the mana whenua will initiate and conclude the karanga. However, if women on the manuwhiri side feel obliged to respond with a karanga of their own, they may do so (mana whenua ask that those who choose to respond with a karanga be confident, but most importantly, be competent in their delivery).

  5. The kawa of the marae is Tauutuutu, which means that the speaking responsibilities will alternate between mana whenua and manuwhiri. The proceedings will begin and end with mana whenua (Again, mana whenua ask that, those who chose to participate in whaikōrero that they be confident and competent in their delivery).

  6. It is highly recommended that speakers limit their remarks to the kaupapa, or subject matter, of the hui.

  7. It is generally accepted to select waiata koroua (traditional chant) to be chanted after each speaker.

  8. After the song concludes, the singers will take a seat to permit the speaker to draw to a close.

  9. A karanga shall be delivered by a female from the host side in recognition of a koha (donation). A male from within the hosts will then collect the koha.

  10. It is required that both men and women wear suitable attire.
